The National Statistics Institute is an autonomous administrative body, with legal personality and its own assets, attached to the Ministry of Economy and Finance through the Secretary of State for Economy. It is governed, basically, by the Law of May of the Public Statistical Function, which regulates statistical activity for state purposes which is the exclusive jurisdiction of the State, and by the Statute approved by Royal Decree of May, and modified by Royal Decree, of July and by the Royal Decree, of June. The Law assigns the National Institute of Statistics a prominent role in public statistical activity, expressly entrusting it with carrying out large-scale statistical operations (demographic and economic censuses, national accounts, demographic and social statistics, economic and social indicators, coordination and maintenance of company directories, formation of the Electoral Census) Also, the law attributes the following functions to the INE: the formulation of the National Statistical Plan Project with the collaboration of the Ministerial Departments and the Bank of Spain, the proposal of common standards on concepts, statistical units, classifications and codes, and relations in statistical matters with specialized International Organizations and, in particular, with the Statistical Office of the European Union (EUROSTAT). In addition, there are the following collegiate bodies with important powers in statistical matters: Higher Council of Statistics, Interministerial Commission of Statistics, Council of Enrollment and Interterritorial Committee of Statistics. In all of them the INE plays an important role.
