About Government of Australia

The National Relay Service (NRS) is an Australian Government initiative that offers a phone solution for people who are deaf or have a hearing or speech impairment. It is funded by a levy on eligible telecommunications carriers. The NRS consists of: a Relay Service Provider which runs the call center where relay officers relay users’ calls to other people; and an Outreach Service Provider which runs the outreach service to provide a helpdesk, and education and information activities which support awareness, training, and use of the NRS. The service is available 24/7 and Australians can use it to contact anyone in the wider telephone network without any additional charges. The organization offers training on how to make and receive relay calls for free. Users can type and read their conversations entirely via a computer, tablet, mobile phone or TTY. They can make certain types of calls via the NRS app. If the user is deaf and prefers to communicate in Auslan he or she can use video relay. Depending on their particular requirements, the relay officer can become ‘their voice’ and read out their conversation to the other person. The relay officer can also listen to the response and type it back for them to read. The National Relay Service is operated from Australia Plains, South Australia.
