The City of Oshawa is situated on lands and waters within the Williams Treaties Territory, home to seven First Nation communities of the Michi Saagiig and Chippewa Anishinaabeg, who have cared for and maintained these lands from time immemorial and continue to do so to present day. The city’s proximity to Toronto, Canada’s most important economic hub, has led Oshawa to achieve some of the highest population growth in Canada, bringing with it an influx of new talent. Oshawa is home to three highly acclaimed post-secondary institutions – Durham College, Trent University Durham GTA and Ontario Tech University. Lakeridge Health is a community teaching site for Queen’s University’s family physician and pediatric residency programs and home to LHEARN (Lakeridge Health Education and Research Network), a hub for cutting-edge training, education and research. The city offers plenty of transit options locally, to Toronto and beyond, including bike lanes and trails. GO Train, GO Bus and VIA Rail travel directly from Oshawa west to Toronto, east to Ottawa and to a multitude of other destinations. In June 2016, the province announced the extension of GO Train service from Oshawa to Bowmanville, which will include four new stations. Oshawa is well served by four Hwy 401 interchanges, the new extension of Hwy 407 to Oshawa and Hwys 412 and 418 that links the 401 and 407. Oshawa also offers a full-service airport and a deep water port.
