The Financial Times featured Revelio Labs workforce data in its September 27, 2026 look at the rise of “fractional” executives, experienced leaders who work part time or temporarily across multiple companies while remaining embedded at a senior level.

Revelio Labs found that 24 out of every 1,000 new executive positions advertised were fractional in 2026, up from just nine five years earlier.

Executive roles are becoming more flexible

In “The executives going ‘fractional’, not freelance,” Financial Times reporter Emily Goligoski examines how flexible work arrangements are moving into senior leadership.

“The trend shows executive roles adapting to the same flexibility pressures reshaping the rest of the labour market,” Jakob Brounstein, economist at Revelio Labs, told the Financial Times.

The trend is particularly visible in finance. Revelio Labs found that chief financial officer roles account for 20% of fractional executive postings, the largest category, followed by marketing and operations.

The data shows how flexible work models are expanding beyond freelance and contract work into executive leadership, changing how companies access senior experience and how executives structure their careers.
