We are Grupo Mateus, a conglomerate of companies that operates in supermarket retail, cash and carry, furniture and household appliances, the bakery industry, medicine distribution and construction, in the states of Maranhão and Pará, in addition to serving three more states (Piauí, Tocantins and Bahia) in the wholesale format with Armazém Mateus. Our story begins at the end of the 2000s, when the Maranhão native from the city of Imperatriz, Mr. Ilson Mateus, decides to venture into Serra Pelada, the largest gold deposit in the world. It was there, in a conversation around the campfire with other miners that the young visionary heard that the city of Balsas, in Maranhão, would be the new agricultural frontier and that it would grow a lot in the coming years. The green gold that began to sprout from the earth. With his entrepreneurial vision and unafraid of innovation, Ilson Mateus didn't think twice: he sold his few belongings and even without having the necessary experience, he set up a small grocery store there. At the same time, he carried out the freight himself in his old truck, taking products purchased in Imperatriz, km away, to be sold in Balsas. A lot of work and perseverance made a dream begin to become reality: in a short space of time, the small grocery store had become a small supermarket and, some time later, in the year , a large and modern hypermarket was opened, with more in . square meters of sales area. An ambitious expansion plan, however, with its feet on the ground, was designed to reach the entire state from then on, opening stores in cities with great market potential, such as Imperatriz in , Santa Inês in and, finally, arriving in the capital São Luis in . Since then, we haven't stopped growing and innovating, and today we are a big family with more than . collaborators.
