Founded in , the Italian Space Agency is a national public body, directed and supported by the "Interministerial Committee for Policies relating to Space and Aerospace" (COMINT. The ASI, while remaining supervised by the Ministry of University and Research , carries out its institutional activities in accordance with the Government's guidelines, on the basis of which it prepares the National Space Policy Strategic Document and the Strategic Vision Document for Space. COMINT was established pursuant to the article of the January Law , n, which, by amending Legislative Decree June , n, restructures the organization and tasks of ASI. In less than two decades it has established itself as one of the most important global players on the scene of space science and satellite technologies. Today, ASI has a leading role both at a European level, where Italy is the third country that contributes most to ESA, and at a global level. In fact, it has a close and continuous collaborative relationship with NASA, which leads it to participate in many of the most interesting scientific missions of recent years. One of the most fascinating projects was the construction and operation of the International Space Station, where Italian astronauts are now at home. ASI has made important contributions to space exploration, building scientific instruments that traveled with NASA and ESA probes and in all the main missions planned for the next few years there will be a piece of Italy. From the Universe to Earth observation, to predict and prevent, for example, environmental disasters and measure the effects of climate change: Italy is at the forefront in this too with systems such as Cosmo Sky-Med. Italy, through ASI and the Italian industry, continues a tradition of research in space propulsion, in particular as leader of the European VEGA program, an Italian-designed launcher.
