Established in , the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) collects and enhances the skills and resources of five institutes already operating in the field of geophysical and volcanological disciplines: the National Institute of Geophysics, the Vesuvian Observatory, the International Institute of Volcanology, the Institute of Fluid Geochemistry, the Institute for Seismic Risk Research. INGV was born with the aim of bringing together in a single hub the main national scientific realities in the sectors of geophysics and volcanology. It cooperates with numerous universities and other national and international research institutions, and is currently the largest European institution in the field of geophysics and volcanology and one of the largest in the world. The main offices are located in Rome, Milan, Bologna, Pisa, Naples, Catania and Palermo. The main mission of INGV is the monitoring of geophysical phenomena in the two fluid and solid components of our planet. INGV is entrusted with the surveillance of the seismicity of the entire national territory and the activity of Italian volcanoes through technologically advanced instrumentation networks, distributed throughout the national territory or concentrated around active volcanoes. The signals acquired by these networks are transmitted in real time to the operations rooms in Rome, Naples and Catania, where specialized personnel, present hours a day, process them to obtain the parameters of the event in progress. INGV works in close contact with the Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR) and has privileged links with the Department of Civil Protection and with the other authorities responsible for managing emergencies, both on a national and local scale. It also cooperates with the Ministries of the Environment, Education, Defense and Foreign Affairs in the framework of national and international strategic projects.
