The Butantan Institute is the main producer of immunobiologicals in Brazil, responsible for a large percentage of the national production of hyperimmune serums and a large volume of the national production of vaccine antigens, which make up the vaccines used in the National Immunization Program (PNI, of the Ministry of Health. Technological development activities in the production of health inputs are basically associated with the production of vaccines, serums and biopharmaceuticals for human use. Its main institutional mission is, therefore, to meet demands primarily focused on public health, contributing to the State in the continuous effort to provide for the well-being of the population. The Institute carries out studies and basic research in the areas of Biology and Biomedicine related, directly or indirectly, to public health. It carries out scientific missions in the country and abroad through the World and Pan American Organizations of Health, Unicef and the UN. It collaborates to improve global health with other bodies of the State Department of Health of São Paulo and the Ministry of Health, in Brazil. It works in partnership with several universities and entities, such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, in achieving its institutional objectives. Develops basic and applied research projects, such as studies on venomous animals, pathogenic agents, innovation and modernization of immunobiological production and control processes and clinical, therapeutic and epidemiological studies related to human accidents caused by venomous animals. It maintains zoological scientific collections and develops educational and cultural activities through four museums – Biological Museum, Historical Museum, Microbiology Museum and the Emílio Ribas Public Health Museum.
