In the 1990s, the only specialized hospital for cancer treatment was in the capital of the state of São Paulo and the patients who presented themselves with the disease at Hospital São Judas Tadeu, in Barretos, were, for the most part, low-income pensioners, with high rate of illiteracy. Therefore, they had difficulty seeking treatment in the capital, due to lack of resources, fear of large cities, in addition to the unpredictability of hospitalization space. This small hospital had only four doctors: Dr. Paulo Prata, Dr. Scylla Duarte Prata, Dr. Miguel Gonçalves and Dr. Domingos Boldrini. They worked full time, exclusively dedicated, with a single fund and personalized treatment. Work philosophy that promoted the growth of the Institution. Due to the great demand of patients and the old and small hospital not being able to accommodate all the growth, Dr. Paulo Prata, creator and founder, received the donation of an area on the outskirts of the city and proposed the construction of a new hospital that could respond to the growing needs. In , Henrique Prata, son of the couple of doctors who founded the hospital, embraced his father's idea and, with the help of farmers from the city and the region, carried out another part of the project. The Antenor Duarte Villela pavilion, where the new hospital's outpatient clinic operates, opens in December. Continuing the project that has been gaining major proportions with the help of the community, artists, the private sector and with government financial participation, other areas of the hospital are being built to provide free care to the cancer patients who come to us. In November , the institution adopted as its name the nickname by which it was already known among its patients, family members, doctors and partners, changing its name to "Hospital de Amor. The entity seeks excellence in hospital medical care, through humanizing actions, constant technical and professional improvement, scientific dissemination of teaching and research, which allows us to absorb the growing demand and thereby strengthen the Unified Health System.
