The National Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM, in Campinas, is a Social Organization qualified by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) (Decree no. / and Law) to manage four National Laboratories: Synchrotron Light (LNLS, Biosciences (LNBio, Science and Technology of Bioethanol (CTBE) and Nanotechnology (LNNano. LNLS operates the only Synchrotron source in Latin America and a set of scientific instrumentation for analyzing the most diverse types of materials, organic and inorganic, LNBio develops research in frontier areas of Bioscience, with a focus on biotechnology and pharmaceuticals, CTBE investigates new technologies in bioenergy, with an emphasis on the production of first and second generation ethanol, and LNNano carries out investigations with advanced materials and is home to the Brazil-China Binational Center of Nanotechnology. The four laboratories have their facilities open to the academic and business communities, from Brazil and abroad. In , more than . researchers used their facilities to carry out research proposals that resulted in the publication of articles in indexed scientific journals. They also have qualified teams of researchers to develop their own projects, in their respective areas of activity, they are partners with companies in innovative initiatives, and they also promote training and qualification activities for human resources.
