About Bibliotheque Nationale de
The birth of the National Library of France is often associated with Charles V who set up his private bookstore at the Louvre in . But it was not perpetuated until the reign of Louis XI. It is reinforced in its collections with François I who established through the Montpellier ordinance the legal deposit of printed matter, now generalized and all media, including the Web. The BnF today has collections departments, distributed between the Richelieu, Tolbiac, Arsenal and Bibliothèque musée de l'Opéra sites. The BnF is also present in the region, notably through the Jean-Vilar house in Avignon. The BnF makes its digitized collections available to the public through Gallica.fr, its digital library.
